Clottey's Clamshell Defense

Do you have plans of watching Pacquiao vs Clottey live stream on March 13? You should for this fight could end on an upset. Here's why.

Manny Pacquiao is in for a big surprise on Saturday night when he attempts to go on the attack against former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao is used to having his way against a recent rag tag variety of beaten up and aging fighters but on March 13th, Pacquiao is going to find that he can’t penetrate through Clottey’s impregnable clamshell defense.

Truly, a reason why you won't be able to stop munching those Roquefort Cheese Crackers for you're eyes will be glued to the television that day.

I’ve seen Clottey in action in many of his fights, and it’s almost impossible to get shots through Clottey’s high guard and land anywhere to his head. The only fighter I’ve seen who’s had any small degree of success at getting through Clottey’s guard is former World Boxing Association welterweight champion Antonio Margarito in his 12 round decision win over Clottey. And the reason Margarito was able to land effectively a small part of the time against Clottey was because he was throwing over 100 punches per round. With that many shots being fired at Clottey in every round, something was bound to get through his guard. Still, at the end of the fight it was Margarito who looked badly beaten up, not Clottey.

In fact, Clottey looked as if he had just gone for brief stroll in the park. His face was totally unmarked and he was barely sweating. That tells you a couple of things. One, Clottey has tough skin because Margarito was able to get through his guard with a number of hard shots in every round. And two, Clottey’s clamshell defense is almost impossible to get through with punches.

With Pacquiao, he’s going to have an even tougher time landing shots because he has such short arms and won’t be able to throw looping shots around the sides of Clottey’s guard the way that Margarito was able to do. Pacquiao will have to settle for just jumping around from side to side to try and get to the sides of Clottey’s clamshell defense. I don’t see it happening.

Clottey will shut Pacquiao down almost completely, and then rake him with shots to the head. Once Clottey starts walking Pacquiao down, the Filipino fighter is going start getting tagged a lot and beaten up. Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto both failed when trying to pressure Pacquiao. However, neither of them had the clamshell defense working for them. In Hatton’s case, he was almost completely defenseless out there against Pacquiao, because Hatton foolishly made the mistake of trying to throw hooks.

That didn’t work and he quickly was taken out by Pacquiao. Clottey is a whole different ballgame entirely. He knows how to block punches, so when he comes forward raining shots on Pacquiao, it won’t be a case of him taking big shots to the head the way that Hatton was in his 2nd round knockout loss last year to Pacquiao.

Clottey is going to end up shutting Pacquiao down completely the same way that Winky Wright shut down Felix Trinidad years ago, sending him into retirement. Once Pacquiao realizes he can’t land anything, he’s going to get desperate and will ask his Freddie Roach for help. Roach won’t have a clue I’m afraid. Oh, I know Roach will have a lot to say, but his advice will be completely worthless because Pacquiao won’t be able to pry Clottey’s clamshell open.

Marquez Can Defeat Mayweather

Just something short and simple on what I think Marquez should do if he wants to defeat Mayweather. Here it is:

Jab a lot but with caution. An educated jab neutralizes speed and controls distance. De La Hoya's jab nullified this part of Mayweather's arsenal and Marquez can do that too.

Lead and feint. Show a jab to make Mayweather react and instinctively rotate for the pull counter. But instead of coming through the front door with the left jab, Marquez should take a step to his right and lead with a left hook or right hand of his own. That slight move will move Marquez out of the line of fire and will give himself a clean shot.

Control the pace. Force Mayweather to fight three minutes of every round but don't get out of the gate too fast, too soon. Lead Mayweather to his comfort zone as a counterpuncher.

Machida will win because he's a more consistent fighter than Evans

Welterweight: Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra
Matt Serra will win because of his solid ground game. I hope Hughes retires after this.

Middleweight: Drew McFedries vs Xavier Foupa-Pokam
Drew McFedries will win because he had good swings that could deliver the winning punches.

Middleweight: Dan Miller vs Chael Sonnen
Dan Miller will win because of his solid kicks.

Lightweight: Sean Sherk vs Frank Edgar
Sean Sherk will win because he has the size advantage.

The Dark Horse, The Rock Star and The Gospel Singer

As the world awaits for the American Idol Results for May 13, let me just give my own thoughts on who should make it to the finals for AI Season 8.

Kris Allen - The Dark Horse
Kris has never really been consistent and sings on the safe side most of the time. However, his charms are undeniable and his appeal to the younger crowd is strong.

Adam Lambert - The Rock Star
Adam is the bravest when it comes to showmanship. Great stage presence and his vocals are impeccable. His emo rock star appeal is an icing on top of his talent.

Danny Gokey - The Gospel Singer
Danny has been trained by his singing experience and is the obvious favorite of the older crowd. His sad story has been his early strengths but now, he's proven to also have a strong and unique voice.

Going through the three possible scenarios:

Kris - Adam Finale
This will be a battle of appeals, for both will compete for the young crowd for the votes. If this ever comes, the clean look of Kris will probably rally the older and more conservative crowd to his side. Adam must now prove that he can do more than just hit those high notes.

Kris - Danny Finale
This will be a competition for the best stage presence. With Adam out of the scene, the younger crowd will most likely go for Kris if Danny doesn't do anything amazing during the finals. Nevertheless, this is still anybody's game.

Adam - Danny Finale
This will be a fight between vocal skills. Adam who has consistently been giving high notes and rock star performances must try to win the more conservative crowd with a soulful performance. Meanwhile, Danny must up his level of coolness to even get the vote of the younger crowd.

Based on these personal predictions, I think the best finale would be that of Kris and Adam. Why? Because not seeing Adam in the finals would be such a disappointment after he has consistently dominated the show this season.

Which leaves us between Kris and Danny and who will give Adam a run for the money. In my opinion, Kris Allen fans will flock towards Adam if Danny makes it to the finale. Making Adam a sure win and a boring season ender.

On the other hand, a Kris - Adam showdown will be a nerve racking fight between two rock stars. And Danny's conservative fans will be divided between Kris' clean image and Adam's vocal prowess.

Well, that's just my two cents. I hope my friend who asked me to write this liked my article.

Whenever Manny has a fight, I observe that Filipinos around the world become united, even just for one day. Entering politics is not his best option. He should just take his money, retire and live a comfortable life. Never mind the people around him trying to get a piece of his wealth.
